Speakers – 4th Qatar BIM User Day

Prof. Nashwan Dawood Ph.D. (United Kingdom)
Director of Technology Future Institute (TFI), Teesside University
Prof. Dawood is currently the director of Technology Future Institute (TFI) and director and founder of the Centre for Construction Innovation & Research (CCIR) at Teesside University, UK. He has spent many years as an academic, practitioner and researcher within the field of project and construction management and the application of BIM in the construction process. This has ranged across a number of research topics including sustainability, ICT for energy efficient buildings, information technologies and systems (nD, VR, integrated databases), planning and management of off-site production, risk management and intelligent decision support systems. Prof. Dawood’s work has been widely published in leading journals, as well as being awarded numerous grants from industry bodies. A well known speaker at international conferences, he is the founder of the CONVR (Construction Application of VR) conference series.

Rene Schumann
Managing Director, HOCHTIEF ViCon Qatar
Rene Schumann is currently the Managing Director of HOCHTIEF ViCon in Qatar. After finalizing his studies with a degree in Structural Engineering and certification as a Project Manager in Germany, René started his career at HOCHTIEF in 1998. Rene supported HOCHTIEF’s efforts to implement virtual construction techniques, an endeavor which eventually led to the establishment of HOCHTIEF ViCon in 2007. As ViCon’s Head of Operations from day one, he has advised clients throughout the industry. René is one of the original creators of the ViCon Method, and the driving force behind ViCon’s focus on pragmatism and client benefits. In 2009, HOCHTIEF ViCon founded a subsidiary in Qatar, where Rene took on the responsibility as Managing Director. Through his close relationships with the construction community, and his work on high profile projects, René has lead the team in Qatar to a prominent position in the Qatari market. Rene is responsible for all international operations of HOCHTIEF ViCon and has started to establish a new entity in UK.

Syed Shareeful Mubeen
Projects Manager, Business Operations Department, Qatar University
Eng. Syed Shareeful Mubeen received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. Degrees in Civil Engineering from Gulbarga University, Karnataka, India, in 1985 and 1990 respectively. Certified professional from PMI-USA, USGBC & QSAS. Early professional carrier from 1986 to 1988 he worked with Government of Karnataka – India on Earthen Dam and Infrastructure construction project, later joined the private sector and worked with reputed developer in Mumbai on multistoried residential & commercial mix use projects. From 1991 to 2005, he was with Saudi Binladin Group – Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where he was engaged in projects of holy cities of Makkah & Madinah, performed on national and international diversified projects such as University, Airports, Seaport, Hospital, Hotels, Infrastructure development projects, Mixed used commercial and residential projects (King Abdul Aziz Endowment Project – Makkah, Faisalia Tower – Riyadh). From May 2005 to May 2006 he joined Drees & Sommer, a German PM company to work as Project Manager on “International City” Project of developer Al Nakheel in Dubai – U.A.E. From June 2006, he joined Qatar University’s Business Operations Department and serving as Projects Manager.

Nasser Rashid E. R. AL-Kuwari
Head of Engineering Information Systems, Ashghal Public Works Authority
Nasser Rashid E. R. AL-Kuwari, Head of Engineering Information Systems (EIS) joined Ashghal from 2005. Present, Head of Water GIS at KAHRAMAA for 2000-2005, Joined the CGIS (MMUP) 1997-2000, as GIS ESRI Trainer, Then Head of Training Section, Head of Technical Services Division. Nasser studied Structural Engineering in USA, Certified Trainer for trainers from ESRI at all there products. The target is to expand the Government-to-Government share and dependency through large scale of inter-agencies applications, like Qatar Permit for Road Opening (Q-PRO), Qatar Design Enquiry System (Q-DES), GIS, BIM, etc.

Christoph Weber
Member of the Board, HOCHTIEF ViCon Qatar
Christoph Weber is the newly appointed Operations Director at HOCHTIEF ViCon Qatar. Chris is an expert in professional services management, and has been advising facility management and engineering companies as an internal consultant since 2002. At HOCHTIEF, he spent two years coordinating the global strategy process before joining ViCon as Financial Director in 2009. He has played a key role in the company’s establishment in Qatar, and its subsequent growth into a leading player in the regional BIM industry. In 2013, he has led ViCon’s market entry in the United Kingdom. Currently his efforts are focused on Qatar.

Casey D Rutland
Associate Director, Arup Associates
Casey is an architect and Associate Director at Arup Associates, specialising in BIM project design and delivery. He is responsible for the Architectural application of BIM processes throughout the company’s offices. Whilst fulfilling the role of overall strategic BIM management on Arup Associates’ major projects and others across the Arup group, Casey is often found in infrastructure, engineering, knowledge-sharing and education forums. He also continues to lead the implementation of relevant technologies to extract the most from Arup’s models, co-ordinates on-going training at office and project level and leads the assessment of other software tools and updates. The experience Arup has, enables the company to exploit the benefits of the BIM process, opening up opportunities to work with consultants outside of the AEC industry, thus leveraging the power of an advanced way of working. This all contributes to ability to deliver first concepts as best possible building solutions to clients in cost, performance and emotive terms.

Mark Baldwin
BIM Consultant, BuildingSMART International
Mark Baldwin is a BIM Consultant who has been engaged in the field since 2005, working in Australia, the Middle East and Europe. He is an active member of buildingSMART at an international level as well as at regional levels and is a strong advocate of openBIM standards. During his four years based in the UAE Mark founded and facilitated the UAE BIM User
Group and was the regional representative of BuildingSMART Middle East to the International User Group (IUG). Mark has written numerous articles on BIM and has presented at conferences in the Middle East and Europe. He is now based in Zurich and works as a freelance consultant.

Owen Delaney
Senior Associate for and on behalf of Charles Russell LLP
Owen Delaney is a lawyer in the Doha office of Charles Russell LLP. Having worked in the Middle East since 2009, Owen’s construction practice includes both front-end and dispute work across the region on a wide variety of projects, ranging from large scale infrastructure and industrial projects to private developments. He has assisted clients across all tiers of the industry from governments and private developers to contractors, subcontractors and tenderers. Familiar with both FIDIC and other forms of construction contract prevalent in the Middle East, Owen focuses primarily on construction, project and infrastructure matters. He also adds his experience of real estate and corporate matters. He has acted on several matters for high value corporate clients, including assisting a regional holding company on one of the largest restructuring matters in the Middle East involving over USD 3.5bn in assets and assisting an international private equity fund with the purchase and financing of EUR 1.2bn of distressed real estate assets.

Amine Touati
Architectural Engineer & BIM Specialist, ASTAD Project Management
Amine Touati is graduated from both, School of Architecture Paris-LaVillette and Georgia-Tech Atlanta 2006. With more than 8 years experience in Design & Construction, Amine specializes on BIM coordination and BIM processes for AEC industry. In the past he worked on iconic projects with substantial BIM integration as: Foundation Louis-Vuitton in Paris (FR 2008) and ITHRA-ARAMCO Project in Dhahran (KSA 2011).
Amine is now ASTAD BIM-Specialist ensuring – in ASTAD‘s projects where BIM is being implemented- the leveraging of ASTAD experience and lessons learned on BIM use for major projects and ASTAD proactive approach on pragmatic use of BIM for Design Management, Construction Management (with FM-Use always in mind).

Vivek C. Kale
Industry Consultant, Bentley Building
As a qualified Architect and Urban Designer, Vivek Kale practiced architecture for three years in India and four years of Urban Design in Middle East with Parsons HBA, before joining Bentley in 1998. He held technical positions for the building design and facilities management applications in MEA. He was the founder member of the regional MicroStation User Group, and a technology enthusiast for the ‘built environment’ for the past 19 years. He has been helping AEC firms evaluate and successfully implement Bentley’s BIM applications for over 15 years. Now working from Dubai and covering the region, his responsibilities include educating, proposing and deploying Bentley’s BIM Solutions that add values to Designers, consultants Contractors and Owner operators.

Sam Collard
Technical Director, BIM Academy, BIM Management Consultant
Sam is an accomplished and proven BIM, Design and MEP leader. His career experience embraces the differing form of contracts to include Private Finance Initiative, Public Private Partnerships, and Procure 21 projects in Healthcare and Education. He is a chartered engineer with over 35 years of experience in design, general contracting and the building services industry. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Building Services and is an enthusiastic advocate of Building Information Modelling and Management (BIM) Sam’s engagement and travels in working in BIM have taken him to Australia Canada, Denmark, Doha, Hongkong, India, United Kingdom and the USA.
